The San Diego Unified School District is seeking Police Dispatchers to receive emergency and non-emergency calls and dispatch to appropriate peace officer or district personnel. This position monitors a variety of safety and security equipment, maintains a variety of logs and records using a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.
 
The school police communications center operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Shifts are typically three 12-hour days per week, with an additional 8-hour day every other week, and 3 to 4 days off per week. *Graveyard schedules (10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.) are currently under a pilot program. At this moment no graveyards and Sunday schedules are assigned to staff. Shifts are subject to change. Additionally, this position will be required to work evening, nights, holidays, and weekends. An approximate 5% shift differential may apply.

This position qualifies for District Paid health and wellness benefits for employee and dependents. 

Police Dispatchers may qualify for the following pay differentials. 
 
Bilingual Differential: 5%
Eligible candidates will participate in a performance exam to test for bilingual fluency.

Post Dispatch Training Differential:  
Police Dispatchers that hold a POST Dispatcher Certification are eligible for a differential. New employees must pass a POST Certified Dispatcher Basic Academy within one year of employment.
Basic POST Dispatcher Certificate: 3.5%
Intermediate POST Dispatcher Certificate: 4.5%
Advanced POST Dispatcher Certificate: 6%
 
Other differentials:
Certified Training Officer differential: 5%
Night differential: 5%

Longevity Differentials - The District shall implement a five percent (5%) longevity differential for unit members that have ten (10) or more years’ service with the Department. 
A unit member in an active monthly bargaining unit assignment who has reached the fourteenth (14th) anniversary of continuous monthly employment with the District, including service in restricted status positions, will be paid an annual lump sum anniversary stipend. This anniversary stipend is $715.88.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Three years of customer service experience in a demanding, fast-paced environment requiring multitasking and independent judgment skills OR
  • A combination of training, experience, and/or education equivalent to successful completion of the P.O.S.T. certified dispatcher basic academy.
  • Recent, full-time or equivalent part-time, paid, civilian or military experience in radio dispatching, public emergency information systems, or law enforcement or experience in a public safety Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) radio communication department is highly desirable.

 LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Typing/keyboarding certificate at a net, corrected speed of 30 words per minute or higher.
  • Pass a P.O.S.T. certified dispatcher basic academy within one year of employment.
  • Successfully complete training program with P.O.S.T. certificated Communications Training Officer (CTO) within 636 hours after beginning training program.

EXAMINATION PROCESS:
Only those candidates whose application demonstrates a combined education and experience which meets the minimum requirements for this position will be considered qualified and advanced in the examination process.  
 

All positions require qualified candidates to pass the examination process which may include one or more of the following components:  
 

  • An application screening and evaluation based on the candidate's education, work history, and responses to the supplemental questions.  Please note that not all qualified applicants will advance to subsequent phases of the examination process.
  • A typing test.
  • A written or performance examination specific to the position.
  • The examinations will be conducted remotely utilizing an online testing platform.  Access to the internet and the use of a camera-ready desktop/laptop with a microphone is required to participate in these processes.
