JOB SUMMARY

 

This is general police work protecting life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances.  The incumbent is responsible for the suppression and detection of crime, apprehension of law violators, and the general enforcement of laws and ordinances within the officer's jurisdiction.  An officer is assigned to various types of duty according to the needs of the department.  The officer works in accordance with department rules/regulations.  An officer is assigned to a designated shift.  Work assignments and instructions are received from a superior officer.  The officer's work methods and results are reviewed by a superior officer through the examination of reports, personal inspection, and the discussion of job-related problems.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

 

  • Covers a designated geographical area as directed by both conspicuous and inconspicuous patrol, to deter the commission of crimes, discover crimes which have been committed, and detect crimes in progress.
  • Responds to calls and complaints in reference to violations of the law, traffic accidents, traffic-related problems and other problems/emergencies where police may be requested.
  • Conducts the preliminary investigation at scenes of traffic accidents and crimes.  Collects and preserves evidence, locates witnesses, and provides detailed reports.  Prepares notes for court testimony.
  • Makes contact with the public to provide assistance in police-related matters, to develop favorable relationships between the police and the public, and to obtain information which may assist in the solution of criminal investigations or the apprehension of the perpetrator of a criminal act.
  • Assists other divisions on special assignments.
  • Acts as detective when assigned.
  • Participates in training new officers as assigned.  Plans and implements a training program to familiarize a new officer with department policies, procedures, and methods.  Evaluates performance and coordinates with others in department to assist the new officer overcome any problem areas.
  • Receives and cares for clothing and equipment.  Attends training sessions on law, firearms proficiency, and other police-related subjects.  Performs related work as required.


KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS 

 

Knowledge of current police methods and procedures.  Knowledge of first-aid principles and skill in their application.
 
Ability to learn the rules and regulations of the Police department, applicable federal and state laws, and city ordinances.  Ability to learn the physical and social characteristics of the City and of criminal law., with particular reference to apprehension, arrests, and admissibility of evidence.  Ability to control personal attitudes, to act impartially, and to react calmly to emergencies.  Ability to obtain information through interview, interrogation, and observation. Ability to remember names, faces and details of incidents.  Ability to understand and execute difficult oral and written directions and to prepare clear and comprehensive reports.  Ability to work long hours and to withstand the physical strain of police work.  Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public.
 
Skill in the use and care of firearms.
 

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

 

High School degree or GED is required, prefer an Associate degree in Criminal Justice.  Shall have successfully completed a Florida Basic Law Enforcement Academy or Equivalency of Training (for Out of State transfer) and have passed the State Officers Certification Exam (through FDLE).

 

A combination of education and experience may be considered.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

 

Possession of a valid Florida operator's driver's license without restrictions other than corrective lenses.  Must reside within a fifty mile radius of the City of Titusville.  Successfully complete psychological and polygraph tests, fingerprinting, driving record check and background check.  Must have telephone in home residence.  Subject to emergency call-out during off-duty hours and on weekends as required.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to move 150-pound objects up to 100 feet in an emergency.   Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling, running, standing, sitting, walking, and operating motor vehicle for prolonged periods of time; climbing obstructions, complete mobility of all limbs and discharging firearms; operating motorized vehicles; lifting and pushing,


Must be able to run extended distances and apprehend fleeing suspects.

  • Speaking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken English word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely.  Ability to communicate verbally both in person and over the phone. 
  • Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles. 
  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Visual Acuity: Have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles, include close vision, distant vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must possess the visual acuity distinguish details and differences when observing people, places, or things in law enforcement work.
  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances.  Including ability to walk in uneven terrain on a daily basis.
  • Running: Must be able to run extended distances and apprehend fleeing suspects.  
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. 
  • Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Handling: Holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand. 
  • Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.
  • Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees. 
  • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles. 
  • Mental Acuity: Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
  • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw or haul objects in a sustained motion.
  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
