Function

This position provides training and development in various functions of the Police Division. This position offers the candidate an opportunity to evaluate the law enforcement profession; and offers the Police Division the opportunity to evaluate the candidate's suitability to perform law enforcement duties. This candidate is afforded the opportunity to make application for the position of police patrol officer.

Examples of Work

•Under the leadership and direction of a designated member of the police force, performs a wide variety of duties associated with such functions as directing traffic, learning to maintain recordkeeping systems, providing dispatcher services, working as school crossing guard, conducting funeral escorts, etc. Such duties will be performed on a rotational basis in order to develop a good working knowledge of police functions as they apply to police patrol officer duties.

•Learns to make detailed reports. Studies police procedures, manuals, and directives to learn normal operating requirements and the inter-relationship of the various phases of police work.

•Incumbent may be moved to new duty assignments with short notice as dictated by needs of the service. As training is completed and expertise is gained, incumbent will be expected to assume more responsible duties until many of the duties of a police patrol officer are being performed. May work full shift in some jobs.

•Attends training classes within the division to learn such things as new records requirements, policeman's rights and responsibilities, wearing of the uniform, legality of actions, etc. May be scheduled to attend classes outside of the division.

•Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school course of study or successful completion of the GED; ability to be courteous yet firm with the public; must be alert, and possess ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; good skills of observation and memory, excellent moral character, and good physical condition.

Must successfully pass a city physical examination, psychological examination, background investigation (to include a polygraph examination), and physical agility examination. Must possess a valid Virginia driver's license and must have a satisfactory driver's record based on the City of Hampton's criteria.

Must be between 18 and 24 years of age.

Features

May work rotating shift. Requires both inside and outside work. Will be exposed to all types of weather conditions. This is a training position and employee will work closely with assigned police patrol officer during the initial training phase. Candidate must become familiar with all techniques, equipment,

Employment is offered for training and experience which will result in the opportunity to apply for the position of police patrol officer.

Candidate must meet all application requirements for appointment to the position of police patrol officer. Performance evaluations as a police cadet will be used to aid in determining suitability as a police patrol officer. Must be able to maintain the ability to provide credible testimony in court, to the magistrate and in other situations where credibility will be of importance.  A sustained finding of untruthfulness at the conclusion of an internal investigation may result in immediate termination. This is a non-exempt position.
