DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, the Police Recruit provides outstanding police services, in partnership with the community, to create and maintain a safe environment that contributes to a higher quality of life for the neighbors of Anna. Enforces Federal, State and City laws, rules, regulations, ordinances, and codes, by performing various law enforcement tasks that support law enforcement and crime prevention activities. Performs investigative work and other special assignments; performs a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of the Anna Police Department. Maintains a high visibility in the community to deter and prevent criminal activity and educates the public in ways to protect themselves from criminal activity and/or prevent accidents and injuries.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

 

  • Conduct routine patrol of assigned City areas to assist in crime prevention efforts, reports and responds to suspicious circumstances, traffic violations, and hazards to life or property.
  • Promote a secure environment by patrolling, on car, by foot and on bike, the City and assigned districts, deterring crime by presence, assisting in high-risk situations, providing special surveillance operations, taking reports, operating Police equipment, enforcing State and local laws and City ordinances, subduing combative or uncooperative citizens, making lawful arrests and keeping the peace on civil scenes.
  • Enforce traffic laws by patrolling roadways, responding to calls from Dispatch Center, observing violations and making traffic stops, searching vehicles in probable cause is found, issuing citations or verbal warnings, and filing reports.
  • Report on motor vehicle accidents by responding to accidents, clearing the roadway, interviewing involved parties, observing, and recording evidence at the scene, interpreting, and drawing conclusions from evidence, making an overall assessment of the incident, taking appropriate actions, issuing citations, and filing reports.
  • Investigate crimes by responding to calls for service, interviewing witnesses, victims, and suspects, gathering, and documenting evidence, submitting evidence, filing reports, issuing citations, taking suspects into custody, and filing charges through the District Attorney's office.
  • Respond to calls for service including the investigation of civil and criminal activity, citizen complaints, traffic accidents and domestic violence issues.
  • Maintain positive community relations by answering citizens' questions and providing various other forms of civic service and assistance for citizens, by surveying the public to evaluate problem areas and specific needs and questioning citizens for their opinions on Police matters.
  • Mediate and/or negotiate conflicts and disagreements within the community.
  • Arrest (forcibly if necessary), charges, and books violators of laws or individuals with outstanding warrants for their arrest.
  • Present testimony and evidence in municipal and county courts on traffic, civil, or criminal cases.
  • Assist with Police Department and City sponsored events including traffic and crowd control.
  • Advocate public awareness for crime prevention, neighborhood watch, and other citizen programs.
  • Complete reports, citations, documentation, and case files in a timely manner.
  • Gather information in criminal investigations by interviewing & obtaining statements of victims, witnesses, suspects, and confidential informers.
  • Plan, implement and complete criminal investigations and law violations using physical evident, statements, and further evidence gathered within the department and effective law enforcement techniques.
  • Analyze criminal, emergency, and law violation situations to determine the best method or procedure.
  • Transport prisoners to county jails.
  • Prepare written reports as required by specific area of assignment.
  • Inform crime victims of prosecution procedures, discuss investigation procedures.
  • Check condition and status of assigned equipment; secures all equipment before leaving it unattended.
  • Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

 

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or GED equivalent, supplemented by the successful completion of required Police training programs. 
Must be a Unites States citizen. 
Must be at least 21 years of age.
Must possess a valid Class "C" license when hired.
Must pass a drug screen, criminal background check, MVR check and any other verification required by the Anna Police Department.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of Local, State, and Federal lase; defensive driving tactics; arrest techniques; regulations, practices, and protocols for handling firearms; Texas Penal Code; City ordinances; health and safety codes.
Skill in communicating clearly both verbally and in writing; applying arrest tactics in accordance with established procedures; operating a personal computer; completing clear and detailed reports. 
Ability to learn the use and care of firearms and specialized equipment. 
Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, law enforcement agencies and the public. 
Must be able to work shift work, holidays, and weekends. 
Ability to read and comprehend training materials, departmental policy, rules, regulations, laws, and ordinances.
Knowledge of the specific practices and procedures for assigned unit(s). 
Knowledge of police practices, methods, procedures, equipment, and services. 
Knowledge of customer service and public relations methods and techniques. 
Knowledge of computers and related equipment, hardware, and software to prepare reports, maintain and research databases. 
Knowledge of City policies and procedures. 
Ability to acquire skill in the use of firearms, radio equipment, physical defensive tactics and first aid. 
Ability to acquire skill in the operation of a patrol vehicle and other law enforcement equipment. 
Ability to always remain alert and to reactive quickly, calmly, and rationally in times of extreme stress. 
Ability to prioritize in decision-making and make decisive actions. 
Ability to enforce laws firmly, tactfully, and impartially. 
Ability to Interpret and apply federal, state, and local policies, procedures, laws, and regulations.
