Working under the direction of the City Manager, the Chief of Police serves as the administrative head of the Police Department, organizing and directing all of its activities.

 

Duties

 

  • The Police Chief plans, organizes, directs, and coordinates the activities of personnel of the Police Department in preserving order, protecting life and property, and enforcing laws and ordinances.
  • Interviews and discharges employees as necessary.
  • Supervises, directs, and assists with investigation work on major crimes and accidents.
  • Confers with attorneys in connection with the prosecution of criminal complaints; reviews correspondence.
  • Formulates an annual budget and controls budget expenditures.
  • Recommends purchase of equipment and supplies.
  • Monitors for ongoing compliance with all P.O.S.T. and other State requirements.
  • Attends City Council meetings.
  • Participates in community events as needed; answers pubic inquiries when necessary; and does related work as needed.

 

Qualifications

 

  • Current employment, or honorable retirement (within the last three years) from a California police agency certified by the State Commission on Peace Officers' Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.).
  • Bachelor's degree, with major course work in Police Sciences, Business, Public Administration, or a related field is required. Master's degree desired.
  • Five years of California law enforcement experience at a supervisory level of sergeant or above, including a minimum of one year at the rank of police captain.
  • Advanced and Supervisory certificates from the State Commission on Peace Officers' Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) are required, Management certificate is desired.
  • Must have a valid California Class "C" driver's license.
