Description

The City of Battle Creek's Police Department is looking for Police Cadets to assists in department and community programs, especially those concerning the youth, crime prevention, community education and security premise surveys. 

Examples of Duties

 

  • Acts as a role model for the youth in this community.
  • Completes all forms, schedules and reports. 
  • Maintains files and records. 
  • Provides assistance to the Patrol and Investigations Divisions in the processing of juveniles.
  • Maintains a working relationship with juvenile authorities, judicial system and other agencies that deal with youth oriented problems.
  • Reports unusual problems, violent behavior, etc., while supervising juveniles to the immediate supervisor. 
  • Helps enhance police/youth relations via counseling, instruction and coaching,  Insures the use of safety belts for passengers.
  • Meets with Executive Officer Commander or assigned Supervisor to develop strategies consistent with the goals and objectives of the Cadet Program. 
  • Maintains communication with the assigned supervisor while on duty. 
  • Complies with the City Administrative Code, Departmental Rules and Regulations, and policies and procedures pertaining to the position. 
  • Maintains and insures that all assigned equipment is in proper working order. 
  • Participates in training programs.
  • Attends community meetings. 
  • Ensures appropriate confidentiality of all information, correspondence, and reports. 
  • Basic knowledge of office technology and software programs, Other duties as assigned. 

 

Typical Qualifications

 

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or GED equivalent.
  • Enrolled in a police pre-certification curriculum.
  • Valid Michigan Driver's License or ability to acquire.
  • Reasonable knowledge of traffic rules and regulations.
  • Some knowledge of modern police practices and procedures.
  • Mental alertness and good powers of observation.
  • Ability to prepare accurate written records and reports.
  • Ability to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with other employees and the public.

 

Supplemental Information

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
Expected to perform the following or it is a critical part of the position: Driving, lifting, climbing, bending, grasping, holding, reading, writing, eye-hand coordination, hearing, talking, seeing (clear vision near and/or far, color, depth, field), using the telephone, contact with the general public, working alone and outside. 

This position is not eligible for benefits.
