This class is assigned to provide care, custody, movement, and control of inmates.
 

FOR OUT-OF-STATE CORRECTIONS CERTIFIED OR MILITARY MEMBERS WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT


If you are certified in Corrections in another state, a federal agency, or military, or if you have more than four years' break in Florida Corrections certification, you may be exempted from attending the full basic recruit academy and may qualify for an Equivalency of Training. To determine if you meet the requirements please contact the Gulf Coast Criminal Justice Selection Center for an assessment. To be eligible for this position, you must first complete the Equivalency of Training process.

Non-Certified Applicants: 
The Escambia County Corrections Department will sponsor Non-Certified Candidates through the Corrections Academy. Not only will you be sponsored, we will pay for the academy, and you will also receive Corrections Officer Trainee/School starting salary while attending the Academy.

This is a "mandatory-testing" position that requires Drug Testing.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Patrols housing units to provide care, custody, and control of inmates

Provides security of inmates, civilians, and staff during visitation, physical recreation, and other inmate movements

Participates in investigating inmate disciplinary infractions, which includes collecting and preserving evidence, interviewing witnesses and suspects, and securing crime scenes

Prepares detailed and accurate reports, records, statistics, and/or logs on daily activities

Responds to emergency situations and renders emergency assistance at accidents and/or catastrophic situations

Serves criminal warrants and/or other legal documents

Transports inmates, suspects, and/or applicable individuals to appropriate facilities and/or locations

Attends court to testify in trials and/or participate in depositions

Performs other duties of a similar nature or level

Positions assigned to Classification may be responsible for:
Determining when to place and remove inmates into and out of disciplinary confinement 

Determining the eligibility of inmates for specialized programs

Determining appropriate classification of inmates to ensure appropriate housing arrangements

Positions assigned to Court Services may be responsible for:

Transporting inmates to and from court and medical appointments
Supervising inmates while awaiting movement to the courtroom
Maintaining security in the courthouse lock-up, support areas, and outside facilities
Performing routine maintenance on vehicles used to transport inmates
Assisting in moving inmates and detainees
Verifying paperwork of court commits

Positions assigned to Training may be responsible for:
Preparing for and instructing classes on a variety of topics related to the effective operations of the department
Maintaining instructor aids, training equipment, and inventory
Developing lesson plans
Maintaining training records

Positions assigned to Inmate Work Crew may be responsible for:
Operating crew trucks to drive to and from assigned work areas
Directing the work of inmate crews
Monitoring inmate work details
Training work crews on the proper use of equipment
Setting up and maintaining the safety of work sites and inmates

 

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications Requirements:

 

Training and Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.), minimum age of 18, and one year of experience performing work as a certified corrections officer/detention deputy; or, a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.
 
Licenses and Certifications:
Criminal Justice Standard and Training Commission (CJSTC) certification

Florida Department Law Enforcement (FDLE) certification
Valid driver's license from state of residence

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics (KSAOs):
basic investigative techniques and procedures
applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, regulations, codes, and/or statutes
CPR
firearms operation
recordkeeping procedures
charging inmates with disciplinary violations
interviewing inmates
maintaining records and logs
utilizing firearms
preparing and maintaining activity reports, logs, and related documentation
communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction

Emergency Management Responsibilities:
During emergency conditions, the incumbent of this position will automatically be considered an emergency service worker. This employee is subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situation and is expected to perform emergency service duties, as assigned.

 

Physical Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require:
Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, finger and hand dexterity as well as repetitive motions.
Very Heavy Work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, work space restrictions, intense noises and travel.
