The Prince George's County Department of Corrections seeks individuals to fill current and future Correctional Officer vacancies. The position of Correctional Officer provides exceptional training and benefits to applicants considering a profession in Corrections. The Department is looking for qualified men and women that possess interpersonal communication skills, exhibit good character, and are honest and reliable.

This position is designated "essential," and the incumbent must be willing to participate as a critical/essential employee during emergencies in the event of a natural or manmade disaster; or special activities/events. Essential employees are expected to report to work or remain at work when other County employees are granted administrative leave. Employees in this classification may be assigned to any of the three shifts to ensure 24-hour coverage to maintain the facility's security.

***Entry–level correctional officers will receive a signing bonus totaling $5,000***
 

Candidates will receive the first payout of $500 in their first paycheck after their hire date, the second payout of $2,000 in their paycheck after graduating from the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections Correctional Entrance Level Training (CELT) Academy, and the third payout of $2,500 in their paycheck after completing an 18-month probationary period and a “Satisfactory” or above rating on their Past Performance Appraisal. The 18-month probationary period begins after graduation from the CELT Academy.
 

 

 

 

Examples of Work

 

The Correctional Entrance Level Training (CELT) Academy is a 15-week program (M-F). Training will include Defensive Tactics, Use of Force, CPR and First Aid, firearms training, and students will participate in daily physical exercise. 
  • Must be able to wear a mask or face covering indoors for a minimum of 8 hours (during the pandemic protocol)
  • Provides care, custody, and control of inmates in a direct supervision environment
  • Conducts regular head counts of inmates on assigned post
  • Monitors inmate behavior and reports unusual activity to ensure safety and security
  • Assists other Correctional Officers with the management of inmates
  • Conducts regular searches of inmate areas such as cells, recreation rooms, and showers for contraband
  • Manages confrontational situations as they arise to maintain security
  • Able to perform CPR and/or first aid when necessary
  • Investigates and responds to emergencies within the Department of Corrections
  • Operates radios, telephones, and other communication equipment
  • Prepares routine reports and records electronically
  • Maintains the inventory of various security equipment
  • Provides counsel and assistance to inmates
  • Ensures inmates are afforded fair and equitable treatment.

 

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications
      *   U.S. Citizen or have at least 5 years of Permanent Resident Alien Status
  • High school graduate or possess a GED certificate recognized by the Maryland State Board of Education
  • 18 years old at the time of application
  • Possess a valid driver's license issued in the United States

Upon acceptance of employment as a Correctional Officer Private candidates may be offered a temporary support position as a Green Officer until the start of the Correctional Entrance Level Training academy.  
 
Reasons for disqualification may include (but are not limited to) the following: previous disqualification; deception; poor work history; poor driving record; suspended license; poor credit history; history or pattern of crimes both reported and not reported;  felony conviction; illegal drug usage, possession, distribution, sale or purchase; falsification of application or other documents; failure to meet physical standards; failure to present a professional appearance (see Career Consideration); inability to competitively complete any of the component parts of the selection process; and/or any other disqualifying factor as determined by the Department of Corrections.

 Any inappropriate conduct or behavior displayed at any point during the background process will result in permanent disqualification from consideration for this and any other Public Safety Position within Prince George's County Public Safety Services.
